UDON THANI THAILAND –Precious coffee was spared being torched as the result of an apparent electrical fault. This reporter was sat at neighboring Vintage Cafe and noted several fire trucks passing by to a nearby incident. Lo and behold the fire was at Beyond Cafe Nong Prajak.
The staff at Vintage asked if we could watch the cafe as they poured out to the street to gawk at the incident. I decided to venture camera in hand to the closest smoke point.
After carefully navigating the wet laterite soil and several discarded lighters (no snakes encountered) I managed a pic at the rear of the establishment over a neighboring gate.
It was clear there was some kind of electrical issue and considering the time of the incident it’s very lucky it happened during business hours. The fire could have easily spread and taken the whole cafe with it.
Beyond Cafe was Udon Thani’s first real coffee cafe in terms of providing consistent good taste with excellent service, and never really failed on either count. As such it stood out as the example of how to run a business. The idea to have the place attached to a car wash was sheer genius or luck on the part of the owners.
Several copycats have emerged and one true contender but that’s another story for another day.
Fact is no one was hurt and customers were evacuated safely. Fire suppression units arrived quickly from their stations on the opposite side of Nong Prajak Park.
Udon Thani has been spared a coffee house so all is well.
