If you are American, there’s no end to how many times your Thai wife of girlfriend has heard you say “in my country this is better” or similar. When it comes to American cities there are many options, but I think San Francisco has the greatest mix of what one might find most suitable for a vacation. The City itself is surrounded by several amazing nature options, the vast northern California coastline, Wine County in Sonoma, etc.
Then there’s The Bay itself with ports such as Sausalito, and islands to visit like Angel Island, Alcatraz Island, North Beach with it’s Little Italy, Chinatown, Fisherman’s Wharf, the list is endless.
When it comes to food and atmosphere, there’s something for everyone on North Beach, -albeit not cheap! But that said, I really would keep around North Beach with my relatives if I stayed anywhere. It’s got all the food spots, and the best ones are tucked away to the back of streets like Grant & Green, etc. The old “barbary coast” San Francisco has diminished but it’s hallmarks are still present, like Caffe’ Trieste, Vesuvio’s, Sodini’s, etc.
From riding Cable Cars to simply walking around, the sights and sounds are truly inspiring, even the sea lions at the wharf.

Sonoma / Wine Country
The movie sideways was not the be all end all of showing up how pretty this part of the countryside is, but the fact it’s sooo close to SF you just have to try it.
